Roberval – in Lambert’s words, “a dirty little muddle of bungalows and two-story commercial units that gnaw away at a portion of the Lac Saint-Jean shoreline”– has drawn underemployed twentysomething Querelle from Montreal with the prospect of employment in the town sawmill, but he soon finds himself a central participant in a bitter strike. The Montreal writer takes the tribute further, too: Shifting the scene from a port city in Brittany to a logging town in northern Quebec, reimagining the original’s vision but respecting his essence, he shows himself a worthy heir to Genet’s project of giving the public morality of the day a thoroughly subversive seeing-to. It’s a direct homage to Jean Genet and his 1947 novel, Querelle of Brest – a work perhaps best known in the non-Francophone world for a 1982 Rainer Werner Fassbinder film adaptation starring Brad Davis. If the title of Kevin Lambert’s Querelle of Roberval rings any bells, it should. ![]()

![]() You'll be talking about it for years to come!" - Naples Daily News (FL) "One of the most powerful novels I've ever read.I am compelling all of you, even begging you, to make this novel your next read. ORPHAN TRAIN wrecked my heart and made me glad to be literate." - Monica Wood, author of When We Were the Kennedys "I loved this book: its absorbing back-and-forth story, its vivid history, its eminently loveable characters. Kline reminds us that we never really lose anyone or anything or-perhaps most importantly-ourselves." - Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle "In ORPHAN TRAIN, Christina Baker Kline seamlessly knits together the past and present of two women, one young and one old. With compassion and delicacy Kline presents a little-known chapter of American history and draws comparisons with the modern-day foster care system." - Library Journal "A compelling story about loss, adaptability, and courage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Later editions of the book extended the love languages doctrine to apply to all kinds of relationships, from parents and children to co-workers.) “There’s a universal human need to feel loved,” he writes in the book. ![]() Maybe my erstwhile boyfriend’s love language was something different, like gift giving, or physical touch.Ĭhapman’s Love Languages, first published in 1992, argues that many relationship conflicts can be explained by his theory of romantic miscommunication. Not everyone thinks a plastic container of soup can contain heavy romantic overtones, but I do. He would have explained that we were speaking different “love languages.” I was and remain someone who loves small acts of consideration. Gary Chapman, author of the blockbuster, perennially best-selling relationship advice book The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts, would probably have read it differently. If I was sick… wouldn’t it be best if he left me alone? Maybe we could hang out again when I was feeling better? I remember feeling humiliated, like I’d been stood up on a date. The symbolic importance of the soup appeared to be completely lost on him. In fact, he expressed his bewilderment more eloquently than he had ever expressed anything to me before. When I called him and asked, sickly-yet-cutely, if he could bring me some soup, he seemed confused by the request. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are the four different areas used to determine personality types: When you take the test, you’ll find out how your personality fits into four different areas, just as the traits fit into fictional characters INFP types.
